It is reported that BASF will build two new Catalold ready to use metal injection molding (MIM) raw material technology and production facilities in Shanghai and Guanyin, Taiwan to enhance its business development in this field.
One of the Catamold production facilities will be built at BASF's production base in Guanyin Township, Taoyuan County, Taiwan, with a designed annual output of over 5000 tons. It will be completed and put into operation in the second half of 2013. The other is the Catamold Technical Service Laboratory established in Shanghai, which is under the jurisdiction of MIM raw material business. The laboratory is located in the BASF Asia Pacific Innovation Park in Pudong, Shanghai and will mainly provide technical support and customer training services.
Catalold is a ready to use raw material for BASF's metal injection molding (MIM) and ceramic injection molding (CIM) industries, with a product portfolio including low alloy steel, stainless steel, special alloys, and ceramics. Due to the use of Catamold, components with extremely complex geometric shapes can now be processed on traditional injection molding equipment, making metals and ceramics as easy to shape as plastics, creating new possibilities for the processing of complex components; In addition, it also has outstanding economic and technological advantages, including high degree of automation, wide shape range, near net shape manufacturing, excellent mechanical performance, etc.
At present, the MIM market share in the Asia Pacific region has accounted for nearly 50% of the global market. Dr. Stefan Koser, Vice President of BASF Metal Systems Business Unit, said, "BASF expects this proportion to increase to 60% by 2020. Therefore, the Asian market will become one of the main driving forces for the development of Catamold's business. This investment reflects BASF's firm commitment to the Asian metal injection molding industry and will further unleash the sustainable growth potential of this technology."
