Introduction to powder metallurgy
What is powder metallurgy? Powder metallurgy is a metal forming process by heating compacted metal powder to just below its melting point. Although the process has been around for over 100 years, over the past quarter century it has become widely recognized as an excellent method for producing high-quality parts for a variety of important applications. This success is attributable to the process' advantages over other metal forming techniques such as forging and metal casting, material utilization, shape complexity, and near-net-shape dimensional control. These in turn contribute to sustainable development, making powder metallurgy a recognized green technology.
These include complex planetary carriers for four-wheel-drive torque transfer systems, helical gears and stainless steel blades for laparoscopic scissors, manifolds for offshore oil platforms weighing over 6.5 tons, and steel V-8 engines used in of connecting rod. All of these components are manufactured using powder metallurgy.
Powder metallurgy technology
In fact, powder metallurgy includes several different techniques for making semi-dense and fully dense parts. A traditional powder metallurgy process, known as pressing and sintering, is used to produce the planet carrier shown here. The surgical scissors components are formed by the metal injection molding (MIM) process, the manifolds are manufactured by the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process, and the connecting rods are produced by the powder forging (PF) process. At the same time, the newcomer metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) is gaining popularity.

Using many of the techniques in PM processing technology, as well as other processes such as spray molding, rolling, rapid solidification, etc., it is now also possible to produce components using granular materials other than metal powders. Today's advanced materials are rarely made solely of metals and metal alloys and often contain ceramics, ceramic fibers and intermetallic compounds. These include: cermets, intermetallic compounds, metal matrix composites, nanostructured materials, high speed steel.
